AGRICULTURE AND MALARIA

The appearance of widespread malaria in Africa may have been caused by the rise of African agriculture.  One theory
holds that the clearing and cultivation of land created sunlit pools in clearings, providing an ideal habitat for
mosquitoes to breed, and also fostered the spread of the disease by giving rise to larger populations that remained in
one place.  A mutation found throughout the continent is estimated to have arisen within the past 3,840 to 11,760
years, which is consistent with evidence that malaria has only significantly impacted upon humans since the dawn of
agriculture.
